Tournament Re-Cap of Coach Jeff Cave Memorial Scramble on 11/10/2018

Highlight Video from the Coach Jeff Cave Memorial Scramble

The above link is a short highlight video that Coach Putnam’s Video Class was able to put together.  Check it out!

I wanted to reach out to all of you and apologize if the tournament this weekend did not meet your expectations for our program.  There were several areas that I was not happy with either.  It was the first tournament of the year for all wrestling teams, and that will always come with some problems, but I will also admit that I was trying to cover a lot of areas that needed to be covered and was not happy with the end results.  We will work hard to address those areas and improve before our next tournament.

The tournament this past Saturday was unlike any that we have been to in the past or that we have hosted.  It was a scramble style tournament, which is very informal when compared to a traditional double-elimination bracketed tournament or even a Team Duals tournament that could be bracketed or pools.  Saturday was more about match-ups and trying to get all of our wrestlers as many matches as we could.  I understand that this format was different than many of you were used to, and I take responsibility for not explaining more ahead of time what this tournament would be like.

There are other areas of concern that I will address with the team at practice today, but I could also use your help as parents to reinforce the same expectations when you are speaking with them as well.  Our expectations are for all wrestlers to stay with the team while we are wrestling; we expect our wrestlers to be engaged in the match that is being wrestled and cheering on our teammates, but not screaming out moves; we expect our wrestlers to not have electronic devices out while a team member is wrestling; we expect for our wrestlers to to have good attitudes on and off the mat and wrestle hard; we expect for wrestlers to listen to the coaches in their corner during and in between periods for choice, wrestlers are not to select top/bottom/neutral without checking with their coach first.

I am so grateful to Mrs. Cauthen and the Beta Club for stepping up big in the concession stand and covering that responsibility for us.  We will be splitting the money raised through concessions with the Beta Club to help fund the Jeff Cave Memorial Scholarship.  I have learned several areas that will need to be addressed this week before we host the JV Hurricane Scramble on 11/19 and the Colonel Harvey Robinson Duals on 11/20.  One area that I could really use help with is setting up and running the hospitality room.  If I could get a few parents to rotate through there throughout the day on Monday and Tuesday, that would be extremely helpful towards us running both of these tournaments smoothly next week.  Our managers are mostly new girls, but learned a lot about keeping score this weekend, so they should be good to go for next week’s tournaments.  We have a better plan in place for the matches for next Monday’s tournament and Tuesday will be a traditional Duals Format that we are used to competing in.  If we all work together, we can provide the best possible environment for our wrestlers.

Looking at the good things from this weekend, we were able to get a lot of wrestlers their first ever match, and many of them were able to get a win.  We wrestled both our JV wrestlers and Varsity wrestlers at this Varsity tournament, so the wins and losses may not have been where we would have liked to see them, but all wrestlers got some mat time and we have all the matches on film so we can use it to coach the wrestlers up and get better for the next tournament.  One of the biggest things that I try to stress to the team, is that losing a match is just an opportunity to learn.  I do not place a lot of stock in early season records.  I would rather them make a few mistakes now and learn from them so they have a better rest of the season.  All of the matches from Saturday will count towards the boys earning their points towards Varsity Letter Status.

More detailed information about plans for events below:

JV Tri-State Duals Tournament @ Ringgold on 11/16/2018

Our first official JV Match will be held this Friday Night @ Ringgold HS.  We need parents to donate fruit (oranges/bananas/cuties) and granola for this trip.  We have peanut butter, jelly, bread, and waters already to take with us. If your wrestler would prefer something different to eat, please send them with their lunch or money to use at concessions.  We will be leaving after school headed that way (approximately 3:50 PM).  Your wrestler will know by Wednesday if they are going to the JV or Varsity event this weekend.  It approximately 1 hour of travel time to Ringgold.  The tournament will start as soon as all schools are there and weighed in, but close to 5:00 PM.  We will wrestle duals against other teams up to 5 duals.  The tournament may not finish until very late Friday Night.  We will have the wrestlers call/text you when we are leaving from Ringgold HS which will give you a 1 hour heads up to be at the Storm Center to pick them up.  It might be as late as 1:00 AM when we get back.  The wrestlers that go to the JV Match on Friday will be OFF on Saturday.  They will not attend Saturday’s Match which is also at Ringgold.  If your wrestler is attending the Varsity Match on Saturday, there will be practice in the Storm Center until 6:15 PM.

Varsity Tri-State Classic Tournament @ Ringgold HS on 11/17/2018

The Varsity Team will travel to Ringgold on Saturday for a tournament.  We will also need volunteers to donate bread, jelly, fruit, and granola for the Varsity Team to take with them to the tournament.  We may have some bread/jelly left over from Friday Night, but to be safe, if we could get a loaf donated, that would be awesome.  We will have plenty of bottled water for the team.  If your wrestler would prefer something different to eat, please send them with their lunch, or money to purchase from concessions.  The Team is to report to the Storm Center @ 6:45 AM Saturday Morning.  The bus will leave at 7:00 AM.  If you miss the bus, you will not wrestle in the tournament.  Weigh-Ins will be at 8:30 AM at Ringgold HS.  The tournament is scheduled to start wrestling at 10:00 AM.  Admission will be $8.00 per person for all ages.  It is a traditional double-elimination bracket.  This means that the wrestler is out of the tournament when they lose their second match.  All wrestlers are expected to ride the bus back to CHS at the conclusion of the tournament.  There is not a specific time that we will return, but we will remind all wrestlers to call/text their parents when we are leaving Ringgold HS to give you a 1 hour heads up to our time of arrival.  Their tournament director estimates that we will be done wrestling around 5:00 PM, which would put our arrival back at CHS sometime around 6:00 PM to give you an estimate.  Please be aware that this is only an estimate.

Tournament Set-Up on Sunday 11/20/2018

This is a voluntary team activity.  Starting at 2:00 PM, We will be setting up for the two tournaments on Sunday 11/20/2018.  Sunday will be focused on setting up the Storm Center for Monday’s tournament.  We only need to put down the felt paper, velcro it, then bring out our two mats, and set up the middle school mat and Adairsville’s mat, and set it up just like it was for our first tournament.  Then we need score tables and chairs set up on the floor as well.  I would like to go ahead and move the concession stand and hospitality items back to their needed locations and we will be done.  It is not a required participation event, but we could surely us as much help as we could get.  You are welcome to come when you can get there and leave when you have to.  We would really appreciate any help you might be able to provide!!!

JV Hurricane Scramble on 11/19/2018 @ Storm Center

This is a JV Tournament that will be hosted at the Storm Center on Monday, 11/19/2018.  There will be no Varsity wrestlers competing in this event, but they are expected to be at the event to help operate the event.  If your wrestler wrestled in the JV event at Ringgold on 11/16/2018, they will be wrestling JV at the JV Hurricane Scramble on 11/19/2018 also.  There will be no challenge matches this week as scheduling does not allow for it.  We have worked on the scheduling of this tournament in an effort to improve our operation of the tournament from the 1st wrestling tournament we hosted.  Having our Varsity wrestlers available to assist with tournament operations will be a big help at this event.  ALL CHS Wrestlers will be expected to report to the Storm Center at 6:45 AM.  Weigh-Ins will begin at 7:00 AM.  Wrestling will begin as soon as all weigh-ins are complete, but estimated time is 8:30 AM.  We will only be wrestling in the Storm Center on Monday.  The plan is to have wrestlers competing on the same mat based on weight classes all day long, with a few of the last matches getting moved to open mats at the end of each round.  We will be operating a concession stand and hospitality room that I would like to have covered by parents.  If you are able to volunteer to help cover any of these duties, please let me know.  As a back-up, I can get the Beta Club to help cover the event, but we will need to split the money raised with them if they are going to work at our event.  I need to let them know something by Thursday this week so Mrs. Cauthen can confirm their participation.  We will rotate Coaches to supervise these areas if we do not get any parent volunteers for these duties.  The JV wrestlers will be down on the floor near their mats for competition and be ready to wrestle about ever 45 minutes.  The goal is to get them all 5 matches if we can.  We will do our best to get all of our wrestlers matches filmed if possible.  At some point during the day on Monday, we will be setting up the Old Gym with 3 wrestling mats that will be delivered to us.  The Varsity Team will be the ones setting up the Old Gym for their tournament with a Coach’s supervision.  The good news is that there will be no break down of mats on Monday night, only trash to take out, concession stand clean-up, hospitality room clean-up, and bleacher clean-up.  Once we complete all of these duties, everyone will be dismissed.

Varsity Colonel Harvey Robinson Duals Tournament on 11/20/2018 @ Storm Center & Old Gym

This is our biggest tournament of the year!!!  We are very proud to honor our 1st Ever CHS Wrestling State Champion from 1980, and retired US Army Colonel Harvey Robinson.  This tournament is a Varsity 16-Team Duals Format Tournament that will be hosted in the Storm Center and the Old Gym at CHS on Tuesday, 11/20/2018.  There will be no challenge matches this week as scheduling does not allow for it.  Having our JV wrestlers available to assist with tournament operations will be a big help at this event.  ALL CHS Wrestlers will be expected to report to the Storm Center at 6:45 AM.  Weigh-Ins will begin at 7:00 AM.  Some of the JV wrestlers may be asked to wrestle with the Varsity Team on Tuesday.  Coaches will let the wrestlers know by Friday which JV wrestlers are wrestling with the Varsity team on Tuesday.  Competition will begin as soon as all weigh-ins are complete, but estimated time is 8:45 AM – 9:00 AM.  If we can get some parents to donate some fruit/granola/breakfast bars for the boys to eat after they weigh in, that would be greatly appreciated.  There is a specified format for this tournament and we will know by Friday this week what mat we will be wrestling on and approximately what times.  We may be in the storm center or old gym, or both throughout the day.  Wherever we are, the whole team will be together on one mat at a time, and we will wrestle a dual-format.  We will be wrestling 5 duals throughout the day.  Our Managers will be working tournament tables in the storm center and old gym throughout the day.  We will have a hospitality room available for the wrestlers and managers to get something to eat throughout the day.  We will take a brief break for lunch after the pool rounds so everybody can get something to eat.  As with our JV Tournament, I could really use some parent help with setting up and operating the hospitality room(s) as with the JV Tournament.  I would like to have our wrestling room set up as a hospitality room for the teams once weigh-ins are completed.  I will need help with adult supervision in both the upstairs and downstairs hospitality rooms.  If you are willing to volunteer part of your time to one of these locations, please email Coach Gayton and let him know what times are best for you.  At the conclusion of the tournament, we will need ALL wrestlers help with breaking down both gyms and getting all mats ready to transport back to their home schools.  Some teams will be bringing their trailers to the tournaments and will want to load up Tuesday night, other teams will be coming back later in the week to pick them up.  We will need to roll up the felt fabric in the Storm Center, Clean up both Hospitality Rooms, Remove all trash from bleachers in both gyms, and take out all the trash in cans before we can dismiss all wrestlers.  It is a big clean-up responsibility, but you will be off on Wednesday and Thursday!!!  Let’s work together and get it done quickly like we did at the first tournament.

Coaches Announcement

I know this is a busy couple of weeks for us, but these will be the last tournaments that we host this year.  We will have a couple of mid-week matches, but those are easy set-ups and breakdowns.  Once we get through the next couple of weeks, we will settle into the routine of practicing each week and wrestling in a tournament on the weekend, with the occasional mid-week dual sprinkled in.  Let’s work together to get through the hard part of our our season and come out on the other side better for it!!!
