Cartersville will have a chance to win its fourth consecutive Region 5-AAAA championship, but the Canes will have to go on the road to do it.

At the very least, second-seeded Cartersville gave itself the best chance to retain its crown with a pair of victories Tuesday to advance to the winners bracket final. The Canes routed No. 7 seed LaGrange, allowing just eight points in both sets, before a hard-fought win over third-seeded Central, Carroll in Tuesday’s action at Chapel Hill.

Against the Grangers, Cartersville had great runs of service by Mia Nicklas, Anna Grace Brock and Abby Allen. Nicklas, in particular, helped make the difference, serving seven aces in a 12-point run.

The Lions, as expected, proved to be a much tougher test.

“Central plays really hard on defense and serves tough,” Cartersville coach Dutch Cothran said. “They had several aces against us, but when we got to their serves, we passed really well. I think this is the least Macey Vaughn, our setter, has had to run.”

Vaughn distributed to a handful of offensive weapons, including Nicklas, Brock, London Moultrie, Lauren Wenzell and Halle Matthews. According to Cothran, Wenzell and Matthews, both seniors, were named to the all-region team.

Cartersville (19-12) now heads to top-ranked Sandy Creek to face the Patriots, who beat the Canes 25-10, 25-17 in the regular season, at 5 p.m. Thursday. The winner has the inside track for the region title, which will be decided that night.
