Model 53, Cartersville boys 45

The Cartersville boys couldn’t quite overcome a hot shooting start from Model in the opening round of the Seven Hills Rotary/Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament.

The Blue Devils knocked down four 3-pointers in the first quarter in building an 18-6 lead. Cartersville rallied over the next two periods but didn’t have enough to complete the comeback in a 53-45 loss Monday at Georgia Highlands College.

After the rough opening period, the Canes (0-2) got going offensively. Kam Callahan and Marquail Coaxum knocked down shots from deep in the second quarter, as Cartersville pulled within 25-18 at halftime.

The lead continued to shrink in the third quarter with Micah Tart contributing five points in the period to help the Canes narrow the deficit to 37-32 entering the final period.

Despite making just 6 of 13 foul shots in the fourth quarter, Model (6-3) held on for the victory.

Callahan led Cartersville with 12 points, while Tart and Kyler Johnson finished with nine points apiece. The Canes will face Darlington in a consolation matchup at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
