Cartersville boys 61, Madison County 54
All-tournament team selection Kyler Johnson helped lead the Cartersville boys past Madison County (Alabama) in the fifth-place game of the AHS Tiger Christmas Clash Monday in Adairsville.
Johnson scored six points in the second quarter to fuel the Canes’ initial rally and had a dozen points in the fourth quarter to help seal Cartersville’s come-from-behind win.
Cartersville (4-4) had another rough first quarter, trailing 15-9 entering the second. For the tournament, the Canes were outscored 55-35 during the opening periods.
However, for the second straight game, Cartersville managed to recover for the inauspicious start. Johnson certainly helped that. He matched Jynerius Stanley with six points in the second quarter, although Madison County still led by a 30-25 margin at halftime.
Kolbe Benham took over in the third quarter, stepping up with all nine of his points in the period to give the Canes a 44-40 advantage. Then it was back to Johnson to put the game away.
The junior transfer, who also starred on the gridiron for Cartersville, made four field goals and four free throws in the final period. Madison County knocked down two 3-pointers in the period, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Johnson’s big afternoon.
