Wrestling Newsletter for Week of 1/4/2021 – 1/9/2021

We are very proud of how our wrestlers performed last week as we returned to competition after our quarantine period.  The Canes Wrestlers competed in the Yellow Jacket Invitational and Spartan Duals last week and represented our community well.  We are excited to be bringing out the football players this week to practice after the conclusion of their fantastic season and State Runner-Up finish.  There will be a lot of new faces in the practice room and in the line-up this week.  We are looking forward to putting the best team possible out on the mat to represent our school and community.  Please read the newsletter for information regarding our schedule this week.  If you have any questions, please email Coach Gayton at bgayton@cartersvilleschools.org .  Thank you!

Hurricanes Ranked #10 in GHSA-AAAAA by Georgia Grappler

Congratulations to Eaiden Neal on being selected as a Holiday Hammer of the Week for Georgia by SEWrestle.com!!!

Holiday Hammers – Dec 21 to Jan 2

Welcome to the midway point of the season … congrats to everyone for getting to this point. We, as a sport, have had out ups and downs – some have been quarantined quite a long time (others haven’t). But the post-season is within sight and hopefully we can all get there. This week we have the Holiday Hammers that spans two weeks (Dec 21 to Jan 2) … congrats to everyone listed. Need a reminder of how the hammers are chosen? See below.

Hammers are selected by their coaches, an opposing coach, or by me (SeWrestle). I prefer to choose as few as possible, but do pick a few when a state or area of a state is not participating. So what is a hammer? If this is your first time to the page please read the disclaimer … it is important to understand that the term has a broad definition. Each coach was emailed on Saturday and invited to submit a name for recognition. If you are a coach and did not receive the email please contact me at sewrestle@gmail.com

Congrats to the young men and women that are recognized below for their contributions to their teams this past week.

Summary of Spartan Duals @ South Paulding HS (1/2/2021)

We competed in our last event without our football players and even though we were shorthanded (forfeited 5 weight classes each match), we were still able to win a couple of duals against West Forsyth (B) and McEachern HS.  Eaiden Neal went  5-0 on the day to lead the Canes efforts and bring his season record to 15-4.  Below are the dual results.

#Spartan: ‘Canes Go 2-3

DOUGLASVILLE — Cartersville opened the day Saturday with three tough losses against likely GHSA state-duals qualifiers, but rallied for a pair of wins at the Spartan Duals at South Paulding.
The Hurricanes (8-6 in duals for the season) had losses to Cambridge (64-9), Lumpkin (54-17) and Central (Carroll), 47-27, but after a break in rounds, Cartersville stopped West Forsyth’s #2 squad (39-36) and McEachern (37-30).
Four Cartersville wrestlers won at least three matches on the day, with two taking four or more wins and one Hurricane going 5-0.
Box scores for all five duals can be found HERE.
Cartersville will next appear at Alexander’s quad meet on Thursday night. Valdosta also appeared in the one-day tournament; the Wildcats’ results were not made available to us at the time of this writing.

The Cartersville High School wrestling team competed recently in a pair of competitions at Rockmart and South Paulding. At Rockmart on January 4, the Canes placed fifth of eight teams in the Jacket Invitational. Trion won the Rockmart tournament followed by the host Jackets, East Coweta, and Pickens. The Hurricanes finished ahead of Haralson County, Cedartown, and Kennesaw Mountain.

Individual placers for the Canes at Rockmart included a pair of runner-up finishes for Eaiden Neal (106) and Giles Turner (132). Joshua Alvarez (126), Lyle Forristall (152), and Jamie Altuzar (285) each finished in fourth place. Daniel Pina (113) placed fifth.

At South Paulding on January 2, the Hurricanes had wins over McEachern and West Forsyth’s B-Team despite having to forfeit five weight classes. Neal (106) had a perfect 5-0 day at the Spartan Duals. With the end of the football season, Canes’ coach Brooks Gayton is excited to gain several additional wrestlers from that team as they prepare for the Marietta High School Traditional Tournament this Saturday.
